Role description

Title: Senior/Staff Backend Engineer, Identity Platform

Location: Remote

Employment type: Full time

You will own and evolve the core authentication infrastructure securing every Phantom account. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will design, implement, and operate a hardened Auth stack, multi-factor authentication methods, and next-generation key-management services that reduce account-takeover risk and provide strong identity foundations for all product teams.

Responsibilities

• Architect and ship production-grade improvements to Phantom's Auth stack, including secure enclaves, hardened token flows, and threat modeling.
• Design, implement, and operate Passkey (WebAuthn) and multi-factor authentication solutions.
• Build modern secrets management systems and key-management services, integrating technologies such as AWS KMS and Vault when appropriate.
• Define and maintain stable, versioned authentication APIs for downstream teams and integrations.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure safe, seamless rollouts and integrations.
• Mentor engineers, lead technical initiatives, and champion reliability, performance, and security best practices.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience building large-scale, high-availability systems.
• Proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, Rust, NestJS, or similar frameworks; experience with system-level languages and tooling is valued.
• Deep expertise in authentication protocols such as OAuth2/OIDC, WebAuthn/Passkeys, and OTP-based flows.
• Strong background in key management services, secrets management, and applied cryptography.
• Familiarity with web3 and blockchain integrations is strongly preferred, including on-chain data and wallet integration patterns.
• Excellent system design and architecture skills, with experience translating product requirements into scalable, maintainable solutions.
• Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and mentoring experience across engineering teams.
