Role overview

We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Backend to balance deep individual contribution with technical leadership. You will anchor new projects, guide technical direction, mentor engineers, and design and implement foundational infrastructure components used across engineering teams in production.

Key responsibilities

  • Architect and develop distributed systems at scale, prioritizing reliability, security, and performance.
  • Provide technical structure and direction for teams, collaborating with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps.
  • Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables using your technical expertise.
  • Design and implement foundational infrastructure components such as dynamic configuration, secrets storage, and container orchestration.
  • Mentor and train team members on design techniques, coding standards, and best practices.
  • Write high quality, well tested code to meet customer needs and maintain production systems.

Minimum qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Proven track record architecting and developing solutions for ambiguous problems with significant impact.
  • Experience building reliable, production-grade distributed systems.
  • Strong engineering judgment and ability to drive design discussions and decisions.
  • Passion for building an open financial system and delivering high quality, secure software.

Nice to haves

  • Experience through rapid company growth, scaling teams and systems.
  • Hands-on experience with blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, or other onchain activity.
  • Experience decomposing monoliths into microservices and operating at large scale.
  • Familiarity with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, and Postgres.
  • Experience building financial, high reliability, or security-critical systems.

Compensation

Pay Range: $211,650 - $249,000 USD. Full time offers from Coinbase may also include target bonus, target equity, and benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k), subject to local policies.

Location and work arrangement

This is a remote role with expectations of in-person participation periodically for team and company offsites. Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only, and may expect occasional in-person collaboration.
