Billing System Engineering Manager

Location: Home based - EMEA (remote; candidate must be located in the EMEA region)

Role overview

Canonical is hiring a Billing System Engineering Manager to lead the development, operation and continuous improvement of our internal billing platform within the Commercial Systems unit. You will combine engineering leadership with strong business collaboration to deliver a reliable, accurate billing experience across Canonical's products and services, partnering closely with finance, sales and operations teams.

The role entails

  • Lead, mentor and hire a team of software engineers working on billing and commercial systems.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand billing and commercial requirements and translate them into robust engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate on business analysis and technical design to deliver end-to-end billing functionality, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Drive improvements to engineering processes, design quality and operational excellence for production systems.
  • Oversee delivery of engineering work, set priorities, manage roadmaps and ensure timely execution against goals.
  • Coordinate with adjacent teams across Commercial Systems and the wider company, including Sales, Finance and Field Engineering.

What we are looking for in you

  • Proven experience as a hands-on engineering manager or team lead, with demonstrated ability to hire, coach and grow engineers.
  • Experience as a software developer in a high-level language (preferably Go (Golang) or Python).
  • Practical experience designing or implementing billing systems and familiarity with commercial system workflows.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to partner with business teams to deliver technically sound solutions.
  • Experience with Salesforce or NetSuite integrations and familiarity with CRM-driven billing workflows.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to collaborate in a fully remote environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field (or a compelling alternative background).
  • Ability to travel internationally for team events or stakeholder meetings (~2–4 times per year).

Additional skills that you might also bring

  • Prior experience in a commercial, sales or finance-facing engineering role.
  • Familiarity with observability, CI/CD, reliable payment processing patterns, and operational monitoring.
  • Knowledge of security, compliance and data governance in billing systems.
